This perfume / scent bottle was made by Matthew Linwood of Birmingham, England.* The bottle is crystal with an etched and gilded feathery design around the top edge. The mounting is sterling silver with a hinged cap. The back of the mounting collar is impressed with the maker's marks. The top of the cap is embossed and enameled with a red flower and 2 green leaves. The interior of the cap is gold-washed and has a number "8" impressed in the center. The mounting rim has a number "8" impressed on the surface. There is an inner glass stopper which is original to the bottle and very often missing on bottles this old. Sliver chips on 2 flower petals and 1 on lower edge of right leaf - these are difficult to see, not glaring or distracting and do not detract from the beauty of the bottle (see additional photos).

ATOMIZER, "ORIENTAL" MILK GLASS, CHINESE MAN, PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1883
From Joan's collection. This milk glass atomizer was sold by the F.M.Keeler Co., a Boston company. An 1880 ad identifies them as "Importers of Druggists' Sundries." The Chinese man sits on an inverted laundry tub with the word "ORIENTAL" in raised letters on the front of the tub. The bottle has all-over very detailed molding. The enameled solid pot metal head, with ball and cord queue, is attached to a metal siphon rod. The head is secured in the bottle with a cork sleeve inside the bottle neck. The cork was originally attached to the rod mechanism. There are threads on the rod indicating that the cork was, at one time, screwed on. The cork is still there and completely intact. There are no marks on the bottom of the bottle.

SAMSON, NAUGHTY BAWDY MONK, DOUBLE SCENT BOTTLE,
c.19th CENTURY
This is a very rare double scent bottle. In the mid-18th century, Meissen modeled the first version of this unique bottle after a 1760s print entitled, "Provender to the Monastery." The print depicted a pious-looking friar on the road back to the monastery pictured in the distance, after a shopping trip to the town. He carries a basket of eggs, a goose, and, on his back, a sheaf of wheat. However, on closer examination, one can see something else he is carrying back with him to the monastery. There, concealed in the wheat, is the face of a comely young lady peeking over his shoulder, with her dainty feet visible at the bottom of the sheaf. On, that naughty, bawdy, monk ! He is smuggling his lady friend into the abbey with the provisions! There were a number of versions of the original Meissen bottle made by various porcelain makers over time. The maker's mark on the back of this bottle identifies this version as a product of Edmé Samson's French factory, Samson Ceramics (founded in the late 1830s). His firm specialized in the reproduction of collectible porcelains of many countries and periods, Meissen, Sevres, Chelsea Derby and others. Most of the reproduced pieces copy mid-18th to early 19th century designs. The bottle has two chambers to hold perfume. The monk's head is the stopper for the main compartment of the bottle. The sheaf of wheat is the second chamber, with the porcelain bee stopper. Ironically, Samson pieces are sought-after collectibles in their own right.
Size: 3 1/2" h. Condition: Excellent no chips, cracks or repairs.

Lovely Flamenco Dancer solid perfume compact for Estee Lauder's, "Beautiful", perfume. This shapely lady holds her black enamel castanets high above her head in the classic pose of a sensuous Flamenco Dancer. The ruffles at the bottom of the Senorita's dress, painted in red and black enamel, form the perfume compact. A red enamel scarf flows around her body, and fiery crystals accent the front and back of her tight-fitting gown. Her black enamel hair is pulled back into a neat bun, and a golden Spanish comb completes her flamenco costume. She truly is, "Beautiful!" The perfume has never been used.
