GILDED CRYSTAL, ENAMEL AND STERLING - ENGLISH SCENT / PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1830
This perfume / scent bottle was made by Matthew Linwood of Birmingham, England.* The bottle is crystal with an etched and gilded feathery design around the top edge. The mounting is sterling silver with a hinged cap. The back of the mounting collar is impressed with the maker's marks. The top of the cap is embossed and enameled with a red flower and 2 green leaves. The interior of the cap is gold-washed and has a number "8" impressed in the center. The mounting rim has a number "8" impressed on the surface. There is an inner glass stopper which is original to the bottle and very often missing on bottles this old. No markings on the bottom of the bottle. This is a very pretty bottle and worthy of a first-class collection.

Size: 3" h. x 15/16" w. Condition: Bottle excellent - no chips or cracks; no dents on cap; inner stopper - multiple chips. Sliver chips on 2 flower petals and 1 on lower edge of right leaf - these are difficult to see, not glaring or distracting and do not detract from the beauty of the bottle. ATOMIZER, ART NOUVEAU, SCHAFER & VATER (S & V), GERMAN PORCELAIN, SCENT / PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1920s
From Joan's collection. This striking, Art Nouveau head, porcelain perfume atomizer bottle was made in Germany by Schafer & Vater. It is pink-tinted bisque with green accent painting. Facial details are beautifully molded - eyelids, defined lips and teeth, finely formed nose with nostrils. A model number (4389) is faintly impressed on the bottom as is the S & V logo. To open, turn small knob on top -- plunger comes up. To close, push down on plunger and turn knob.

RARE -- JEWELED CZECH ATOMIZER PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1920s-30s
This atomizer was made in Czechoslovakia, c.1920s-30s. The bottle is a vibrant Chinese red glass with jeweled ormolu. The emerald and amethyst stones are faceted and bezel set. The bottom of the bottle is slightly concave. It is clearly acid-etched in a circle "Made in Czecho - Slovakia." The mark is difficult to see in the photos because approximately half of the etching extends into the concave center. There are no maker's marks on the mounting.

Jeweled Czech perfume bottles are not rare, but jeweled Czech atomizers are! We have 4 collector reference books devoted solely to Czech glass/Czech perfume bottles -- and -- the auction catalog from the Ruth Forsythe collection. There is nothing like it in any of these sources, nor is there anything similar to it!

Size: 8" high (including fitting) x 2 5/8" wide (at the base). Condition: Excellent -- no chips or cracks to the glass; no missing jewels (all are original); glass siphon rod is original and intact; ball and cord are original. Age wear to mounting. Collar has 2 cracks, both are difficult to see, and do not affect the way the top screws into the collar. COLORFUL CZECH PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1920s-1930s
Unusual and very colorful Czech perfume bottle with threaded metal cap. It has a mottled-colored base and solid-colored orange body with black accenting lines radiating from the neck to the base. The cap is silver-colored metal with a beaded top edge and screws onto a threaded metal collar. There are no markings on the bottom.

PYRAMID, ATOMIZER AND DROP PERFUME BOTTLE (PAIR), c.1920s-1930s
Striking atomizer and drop perfume bottle pair, made by the Pyramid company. The bottles are black glass with matte-gilded feet and are encircled with large matte-gilded flowers. Beautifully molded decoration on both collars. The stopper on the drop perfume is metal with a black glass insert on the top. The atomizer has a clear glass siphon rod and the drop perfume has a clear glass dauber. A Pyramid label is on the top of the foot on the drop perfume. The atomizer is stamped with the Pyramid name on the collar of the fitting. No markings on the bottoms of either bottle.

Drop Perfume: 7" high.
Body on both bottles: 1 1/8" wide (approximately, at widest point).
Foot on both bottles: 2 1/4" wide.

ATOMIZER, PERFUME BOTTLE, MELON SHAPE, Early 1900s
This lovely melon-shaped atomizer perfume bottle is beautifully molded and painted. It is cream-colored with alternating recessed panels and rounded raised sections. The panels are deep red/burgundy and accented with gilding. The rounded sections are hand-painted with leaves and trailing flowers. No markings on the mount or the bottom of the bottle. Beautiful bottle.

MORRIS COLUMN - DISPLAY/MUSIC BOX PERFUME BOTTLE FROM SAKS FIFTH AVENUE, c.1940s-Early 1950s
This kiosk-shaped ceramic display perfume bottle was made in France by the Franor Royale company. It is referred to as a Morris Column. Does the design look familiar? There is a Lanvin display botttle that looks exactly like this one (see Ref. below). The Franor company very likely made the same bottle for Lanvin.

The cylinder-shaped bottle has a hexagonal onion-shaped dome stopper with a cork neck. Intricate molding around the top edge. Molding on the sides of the bottle: "Concerts" - "Music Halls" - "Theatres" - "Spectacles De Paris." Two large, printed and lacquered, paper labels advertise: "Moulin Rouge -- Dancing/Every Evening" - and - "Tabarin - Music Hall. Every day from 9PM to 2AM."

This unusual bottle has a music box under the base. The name of the tune is printed in blue on a label attached to the silver-painted wood mounting on the bottom of the box -- "Boire un petit coup c'est agréable" (translation: "A little drink is nice" -- sure is!!).

Historical Information
Moulin Rouge and Tabarin are historical nightclubs known for their can-can dancing.
The French call this kiosk a Colonne Morris. Gabriel Morris was a Parisian who specialized in printing event posters. He created a French version of an advertising column originally designed by German, Ernst Litfass, who was also a printer. Prior to the creation of these columns, advertising was posted anywhere - on buildings, railings and trees (made for a very messy-looking city)!

Size: 10 1/2" high x 3 3/4" wide (widest point at base). Condition: Good. No cracks. Two touched-up chips -- one underneath the decorative wide extended edge at the top; one on the top surface of a notch, color blends in beautifully, barely noticeable. FLORENZA, JEWELED PITCHER, PERFUME POMANDER, c.1960s
Beautiful perfume pomander in the shape of a pitcher. Stamped on the bottom of the piece is the maker's name, Florenza. This company, best known for its intricate and unique costume jewelry, was established in 1945 by Daniel Kasoff, Inc. in New York City. The brand "Florenza," named after his wife, Florence, was first used in 1949 or 1950. Pomanders were first recorded in Europe in the Middle Ages and were used as herbal amulets that were worn around the neck or placed in the home, with the intention of protecting the wearer from negative spirits, illnesses, or harmful energies like jealousy and envy. It was also used to mask unpleasant odors, personal or environmental. This pitcher is adorned with 3 oval cabochon turquoise stones on the lower part and 4 amethyst rhinestones on the hinged lid. Pomanders held neither liquid perfume nor waxy solid perfume. Instead, a piece of material or cotton ball was saturated with a fragrance and placed inside the pomander. The pierced lid allowed the fragrance inside to be dispersed. A synthetic pearl completes the jewels on this charming piece. The pendent is made of heavy cast metal covered in rich gold plating.

CZECH, VINTAGE PERFUME BOTTLE WITH BRILLIANT HAND CUT STOPPER, c.1928-39
This Czechoslovakian vintage perfume bottle with beautiful clear, cut crystal base and matching fan, cut crystal stopper has a pattern of facets and stars. It is not acid etched, "Made in Czechoslovakia", which was required on bottles destined for export. However, I can personally vouch for its authenticity as I purchased it domestically, at an antique shop while on vacation in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1995, before the Czech Republic started reissuing bottles. This brilliant hand cut vintage bottle will add sparkle and shine to your Czechoslovakian perfume bottle collection.

VINTAGE, LES PARFUMES SALVADOR DALI, CREAM PERFUME SACHET POT, c.1988
Very hard to find, Les Parfumes Salvador Dali special presentation cream sachet lips, c.1988. These surrealistic lips once held a cream sachet scented with the fragrance, Salvador Dali. The creamy yellow plastic lips were part by the excentric artist's iconic perfume bottle shaped as the nose and lips of a woman. The design of the bottle was inspired by his painting, "Apparition of the Face of Aphrodite of Knidos in a Landscape", 1988. The original 1988 special collection of Dali items included perfumes, and three additional rare items - a powder box, figural lips soap and this cream sachet pot...all of which are now very hard to find. The container is empty but has an inner lid that covers the well that contained the sachet.

Rare Schiaparelli heart-shaped, solid perfume jewelry compact for her fragrance, "S", c. 1961. It is now 64 years old!! The antiqued gold-tone case with lattice design on the lid is set with pink rhinestones. It is nearly full with Elsa Schiaparelli's famous, "S" perfume-scented, solid perfume. The solid is suspended from a pretty gold bow brooch, with an "O" ring, and can be detached if desired. Perfect gold foil label on bottom, "Parfums Schiaparelli Inc., "S" Creme Parfum, .12 oz., Net Wt." This is a rare perfume item, not often offered for sale, a real find for the serious perfume collector. CORDAY, LE COQ D'OR, VINTAGE SOLID PERFUME COMPACT, c.1960s
Large, figural solid perfume compact by Corday for, "Toujours Moi," creme perfume. The highly-detailed design is known as, "Le Coq d'Or" - The Golden Cockeral (perhaps after the Russian Rimskey-Korsakov opera of the same name.) This golden crested bird with blue rhinestone eyes is mounted on a pedestal. The hinged back wing covers the perfume compartment. The fragrance was an early Corday scent launched in 1924. "Toujours Moi" translates to "Always Me" or "Still Me." Gold foil bottom label. It has been used, but most of the perfume remains.

PRINCE MATCHABELLI, WINDSONG, OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT DUO, VINTAGE PAIR OF SOLID PERFUME COMPACTS, c.1960s-1970s
This very special offer has a fascinating backstory that begins with a children's nonsense poem, "The Owl and the Pussy-cat" (1846), written by a famous English artist and writer, Edward Lear (1812-1888). It is a simple joy-filled poem that tells the marriage story of an owl and a cat! The underlying message of this enchanting poem is that friendship and love break down all barriers. Fast forward to 1964, when "The Owl and the Pussy-cat" romantic comedy by Bill Manhoff opens on Broadway. Then just six years later, in 1970, "The Owl and the Pussy-cat" comedy movie, starring Barbara Streisand and George Segal, opens in movie theaters. I recommend you do some research online to find out the details of the poem, play and movie associated with this fabulous little perfume compact couple...the owl and the pussycat. They both have green glass eyes and great detail in their design. Both have cello labels on the bottom. This is a RARE opportunity to purchase both of these compacts together as a pair.

A bright red ceramic apple in the center is surrounded by the crafty snake, with green glass stone eyes, who seduced Eve into eating the Forbidden Fruit in the Garden of Eden! With the addition of a chain or cord, this solid can be worn as a perfume jewelry necklace. The gold foil label on the bottom reads: Perfume Compact and Pendant." Nearly all the perfume remains.

Vintage and very detailed from the basket weave cart to the flower blossoms that fill the top, this little flower cart "rolls" in from the 1960s....over 60 years old. The realistic, detailed flower cart with orange and yellow glass stones on top and wheels that turn was designed to hold Max Factor's Hypnotique frangrance. The little flower cart retains most of its original solid solid perfume.

CORDAY, TOUJOURS MOI, TAN RECLINING HORSE, SOLID PERFUME COMPACT, c.1960s
Sitting pretty atop a golden ornate base is a graceful, faux-ivory, reclining horse. This very large compact from Corday has a hint of the Orient about it. The compact still has most of its original Toujours Moi fragrance. The base is beautifully detailed. The "ivory" horse is made of resin and is strong and solid. Inside of the lid is stamped “CORDAY.” This is probably not a solid you would have carried in your purse...it's heavy! It would have been better placed on a lady's vanity table for decoration and to be close at hand to use when prettying-up for the day.

This is Max Factor's version of a woven basket filled with flowers and leaves suspended above the compact on "wire stems". Now that's very creative! This container once held Factor's popular fragrance, Hypnotique. The golden pot has a woven design, and the basket lid has a cluster of flowers attached at the center in a circle of green crystal-like chips. This is a special vintage perfume solid compact that will make your collection bloom!

The song Aquarius was number one on the charts in the USA in the spring of 1969. That same year, riding the wave of popularity for the new age and astrology fads, Max Factor released Aquarius in this adorable, chubby hippopotamus solid perfume compact. The case is gold-toned, embossed with a floral design. Mr. Hippo has amber glass eyes, a decal label and retains all of his Aquarious solid perfume.

RARE, COMEDY/TRAGEDY THEATER MASKS, SOLID PERFUME COMPACT, c.1969
I asked, "What do the theater masks symbolize?" The answer I received is that they are symbols of two of the nine ancient Greek Muses. In ancient Greek religion and mythology, the Muses are the inspirational goddesses of literature, science, and the arts. Thalia (THAL.e.ah) was the Muse of comedy, represented by the laughing face, and Melpomene (mel.POM.en.ay), was the Muse of tragedy, represented by the weeping face. This single solid perfume container cleverly combines the two masks in one container, the comedy mask as the lid on top and the tragedy mask as the bottom. Very rare. I have not yet seen another one on the net or in auctions. No identification as to who made it or what fragrance it once held, but the interior definitely has a lingering perfume scent inside. A rare treasure to add to your collection.

This is another of the creative 1970s perfume solid compacts from Max Factor. This charming child's rocking horse is filled with Factor's popular Hypnotique solid perfume. Lots of detail. The pommel on the saddle provides access to the hidden spring loaded perfume compartment in the horse's body.

HARD-TO-FIND, FLORENZA, QUEEN OF HEARTS, SOLID PERFUME COMPACT, c.1960s
Interesting and hard-to-find Florenza solid perfume compact known to solid collectors as "The Queen of Hearts. The lid is adorned with the beautifully designed bust of the Queen of Hearts shaped into a tapered heart that spills over the edge of the lid. She wears a necklace with a large single emerald pendant and smaller emerald colored glass stones. A queenly crown is on her head and she is happily smiling. Behing the bust and contrasting with the bright gold metal of the container is a tortoise insert. So unique, striking and definitely desirable.

ESTEE LAUDER, COURT JESTER, SOLID PERFUME COMPACT, c.1998
Introduced in 1998, this is Estee Lauder's standing court jester in silver-tone metal. He wears the motley, a traditional checkered costume of the court jester, fool, or harlequin character in Commedia dell'Arte. The diamond pattern on his suit is accented with black enamel and clear crystals. His bicorn hat is enhanced with clear and red crystals; he wears red enamel slippers. A domino mask covers his eyes and he holds a silver baton. Silver foil label on the bottom. The compact is mint in box with a black faille pouch and inner and outer boxes. This has always been one of my favorite Estee Lauder creations.

ESTEE LAUDER, ESTEE, IVORY SERIES "NESTING DUCK", SOLID PERFUME COMPACT, c.1981
This wonderful "Nesting Duck" from the Estee Lauder ivory series was introduced in 1981. It is an oval goldtone compact for the Estee Lauder fragrance, Estee. The case rim is decorated with a blue enamel design. The beige and faux ivory duck with cinnabar accented feathers is nesting on top of the lid. The ivory series Estee Lauder solids are highly sought after by perfume solid collectors. This is one of six creatures in the ivory series.

CORDAY, FAME, "LE CAROUSEL, SOLID PERFUME COMPACT, c.1960s
Who doesn't love a merry-go-round, or, as the French call it, "a carousel"? Corday chose this happy amusement to hold his precious solid fragrance, Fame. His fanciful carousel features one mythical unicorn that twirls round and round, and even up and down, on his pole. The perfect gold foil label on the bottom identifies this creation as "Le Carousel", the carousel, and the fragrance as "Fame". About half the solid perfume remains in the container. It would be a joy to add this cutie to your collection.

This is a truly unique solid perfume item. I've seen it described as a pendant, a charm, and even a zipper pull! What it is for sure is RARE, hard-to-find, and very desirable. Made by Corday to hold their Toujour Moi (Always Mine) scent in a great compact disigned as a sitting unicorn. This example is attached as a pendant to a 12" long chain, to be worn as a perfume jewelry necklace. The tiny perfume compartment appears to be nearly totally full. Excellent addition to your quality perfume solid collection.

This is one of the most beautiful and desirable solids by Estee Lauder from a long line of gorgeous compacts. Ms. Lauder released this little gem at the turn of the new millennium, in 2000, filled with her "Pleasures" solid perfume. The beautiful mermaid's tail is encrusted with lovely teal crystals. Her tousled hair "floats" as it would underwater. A tiny goldfish peeks out from the protection of large fronds of seaweed resting on a large round clamshell that forms the perfume container. The mermaid holds a large pearl in both hands. There is a gold foil label on the bottom and a gold hangtag with the Estee Lauder name and fragrance. Never used. This perfume solid compact is mint. Comes with a black faille pouch and inner and outer boxes.

Rare Schiaparelli heart-shaped, solid perfume compact. The antiqued gold-tone case with lattice design on the lid is set with clear white rhinestones. It is empty now, but once held one of Elsa Schiaparelli's famous perfume-scented solid perfumes. This famous designer's solid perfume compact for the purse is not often offered for sale, a real find for the serious perfume collector. With his floppy black enemeled shoes, red enameled stripped trousers, red double ruffle collar, multi-colored crystal dots on his tunic and his adorable red-nosed, happy clown face, this is a must-have for your solid perfume compact collection. It comes in its original box and has a black velvet pouch. Full "Pleasures" perfume. The Classic Clown presentation was launched in 2001.

Lovely Flamenco Dancer solid perfume compact for Estee Lauder's, "Beautiful", perfume. This shapely lady holds her black enamel castanets high above her head in the classic pose of a sensuous Flamenco Dancer. The ruffles at the bottom of the Senorita's dress, painted in red and black enamel, form the perfume compact. A red enamel scarf flows around her body, and fiery crystals accent the front and back of her tight-fitting gown. Her black enamel hair is pulled back into a neat bun, and a golden Spanish comb completes her flamenco costume. She truly is, "Beautiful!" The perfume has never been used.

Can you hear the roar of the crowd and the blare of the trumpets? Estee Lauder presents this fearless matador solid perfume compact. It holds her "Intuition" scent. El toreador stares down El Toro and swirls his red cape to capture the attention of his adversary. The Spanish matador is powerful and splendid in his traditional suit, black enamel hat, epaulets and slippers, red and gold bolero jacket and toreador pants enhanced with gold crystals, and, of course, the full golden cape with red enamel lining. The back of the cape opens to access the perfume compartment.

This whimsical owl, perfume solid pin, was made by Vanda, an American company, for an unknown scent (possibly "Suspense"). Gold-colored metal with emerald green faceted rhinestone eyes. Container is full and does not appear to have been used. Inside cover is molded with the name "Vanda U.S.A." Wonderful detail.
