WORTH, "DANS LA NUIT", MINI PERFUME BOTTLE, PRE-1936
This a vintage, cobalt blue, mini boule bottle from the House of Worth for one of their signature fragrances, Dans la Nuit. The fragrance was launched in 1924, and this bottle dates from prior to 1936. The blue glass disk stopper has the frangrance name and a crescent moon and stars embossed on both sides. This is the older version of the stopper used from the mid-1920s until the mid 1930s. It was then that a successful lawsuit by Proctor and Gamble for patent infringement of the moon and stars motif forced Worth to redesign the stopper, removing the stars and adding the fragrance name with the crescent moon instead. Interesting side-story for this bottle. The bottle was originally designed by Rene Lalique for Worth, however, this version is not a Lalique bottle.
Size: 2 3/8" h. Condition: Bottle and glass stopper are in excellent condition.

MARY CHESS, SPICE BOX PRESENTATION, c.1960
This fabulous 55 year old "Spice Box" presentation holds six popular Mary Chess fragrances in chess-piece shaped bottles - a play on her name. Each bottle rests in one of the six "spice drawers." The "Spice Box" presentation is very hard to find intact and in excellent condition. The six chess pieces held the frangrances: Carnation, Gardenia, Strategy, Tapestry, White Lilac, and Yram. The bottles and gold metal caps are in excellent condition. All six bottles retain their original gold foil labels on the bottom of the bottle with fragrance names printed in white. The white printing is difficult to see in the picture but all labels are perfect. The pawn bottle is nearly full of perfume, and the other bottles have perfume residue of the mostly evaporated perfume. The set comes in a firm cardboard box covered with embossed gold foil paper. The paper is intact with no tears or scapes anywhere on the surface. There is some very minor age-related color shading on the back and top of the box which I mention for full disclosure. Each drawer has a large round, faceted metal drawer pull. The original gold foil label on the bottom of the box is also in excellent condition and identifies the presentation as "MARY CHESS SPICE BOX, CONTENTS, 6 - 3/4 DRAM PERFUMES ASSORTED." This listing is for one of the opera box fragrances, Indiscret, in original "opera box" box. (Note: Both the French spelling, Indiscret, and the English spelling, Indiscrete, were used on labeling for this fragrance.) The mini Indiscret bottle is molded with a draped fabric motif and has a gold tone cap. There is an excellent gold foil label on the bottom of the bottle. The opera box has a bright fucshia, foil-covered insert that holds the bottle. The fifth bottle in The Royal Box presentation was a tall, frosted Indiscrete bottle with gold metal bow stopper on the center "stage". This listing is for one of the opera box fragrances, Sirocco, in original "opera box" box. (A sirocco is a hot wind, often dusty or rainy, blowing from North Africa across the Mediterranean to southern Europe.) The vintage bottle for Sirocco was designed to visually represent a swirling whirlwind, following the motif suggested by its name. This clear glass mini version also hints of the swirling motif, and has a gold-tone cap. There is an excellent gold foil label on the bottom of the bottle. The opera box has a bright fucshia, foil-covered insert that holds the bottle. The graphics on the box illustrates a theater box at the Covent Garden Opera House, with the fragrance name and a clear cellophane panel on the front.

VANDERBILT, "LUCRETIA VANDERBILT", MINI PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1928
This is the sample size perfume bottle for the fragrance, "Lucretia Vanderbilt." In 1928, the pharmaceutical company McKesson & Robbins created a new cosmetics line with a brand image of a butterfly and four stylized flowers. Appearing on the eve of the Wall Street Crash and the Great Depression, the life of the Lucretia Vanderbilt line was short – ironically similar to that of a real-life butterfly. Most commercial collectors are familiar with the beautiful, cobalt, full-sized Lucretia Vanderbilt perfume bottle in the blue satin, tasseled, drop down case. This sample sized bottle is also cobalt in color and has a front label reading, "A Miniature of Lucretia Vanderbilt Concentrated Extract." Remnant of old cork remains. KAY DAUMIT, "FOREVER AMBER" MINI PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1945
Inspired by the best-selling novel of the same name by Kathleen Winsor. Published in 1945, Forever Amber is set in 17th century England and tells the story of an English adventuress and courtesan, Amber St. Clare, who becomes one of the mistresses of Charles II. The controversial book was banned in Boston as "obscene and offensive." In 1947, Forever Amber was brought to the big screen, directed by Otto Preminger and staring Linda Darnell and Cornel Wilde. In 1945, the fragrance, "Forever Amber" was lauched by Kathryn, Inc, a company owned by Kay Daumit. This interesting bottle has a fan-shaped metal cap. The clear bottle is molded to look like draped fabric. There is a pale amber and silver foil label on the front with the fragrance name and a bottom gold foil label that reads,"Perfume Distributed by Kay Daumit, Chicago, 5/16 oz." An interesting bottle with a story!

The first time I saw a vintage Park & Tilford perfume bottle listing on eBay, I was immediately taken back to the musty, dusty, hometown Five and Dime store of my early childhood in the 1940s, where I first saw Park & Tilford perfume bottles for sale. Charming mini replica bottle of Revillon's, "Carnet de Bal" fragrance. The original advertisements for this perfume show the bottle in the upright position with the stopper at the top. With its recessed base, I personally preferred the latter, brandy snifter position, for display. (See additional pictures for both positions.) Embossed in the glass on the bottom is, "Revillon Paris France." The gold cord is still attached around the neck of the bottle. However, the hang tag is missing. Not often seen in this mini size.

RARE – J. VIARD – CIRO, LE CHEVALIER DE LA NUIT, MINI PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1924
Julien Viard designed the "Le Chevalier de la Nuit" perfume bottle for Ciro. There were 6 sizes produced in this model, including this mini – which is the most difficult to find. The bottle is empty. A remnant of cord that tied the stopper to the bottle remains around the stopper neck. The stopper represents the knight's helmet with plume and is covered with a charcoal gray patina. The bottle represents the body armor. The dark gold paper label is printed in black with the fragrance and maker's names. The thin walls of this bottle make it very fragile and subject to easy breakage – that may be one reason why it is so rare. The bottom of the bottle is molded in raised letters -- "MADE IN FRANCE JV." ("JV" Julien Viard).
