EXCEEDINGLY RARE -- COTY, SALESMAN'S SAMPLE TESTER BOX, 12 PERFUME BOTTLES, c.Mid-1920s to Mid-1930s
This salesman's sample box of 12 different Coty fragrances is something you may not see again!
Judging from the latest fragrance introduction date (Paris, 1926), the set may date from the mid-1920s to mid-1930s. The box is black, with a faux leather-grain and has a snap closure. The cover interior is lined with brown velvet. The box frame and compartments may be made of wood(?). The compartments are covered with fabric. The dark green-printed labels were designed by Rene Lalique. Eight bottles are acid-etched on the bottom, 4 bottles are molded on the bottom, with the word -- FRANCE. None of the bottles have been opened. The exteriors have not been cleaned. The bottles are not arranged alphabetically by fragrance name in the box (as found). Ten bottles are empty, two have some perfume. Interestingly, there is one undocumented fragrance (not identified in Ken Leach's "The Reference Guide for Commercial Perfumes 1860-1960"). See list of fragrances below.
This is not a counter tester. Counter tester bottles were displayed, upright, in wood boxes that held 12 bottles (sometimes 2 each of 6 different fragrances). Some counter testers were brass and held 6 bottles, upright.

Ambre Antique(25% full); Chypre; Emeraude(50% full); Jasmin de Gorse; La Rose Jacqueminot; L'Effleurt; L'Or; L'Origan; Muguet; Paris; Styx;

THE HOUSE FOR MEN, HIS AFTER SHAVE LOTION, RED ENAMEL PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1947
From Joan's collection. This handsome-looking gentleman, with a mischievous smile and a winking eye, was distributed by The House for Men, Inc., Chicago, Illinois (c.1947). The bottle is completely enameled and molded in the form of a man's torso wearing a suit. The word "HIS" is molded between the lapels on the suit. This bottle was made in 2 different-colored enamels - burgundy and red (plus a gilded version). This is the RED version (the bottle looks darker in the photos than it actually is). It contains the original after shave lotion. The bottle weighs slightly over 1 lb. - it may be full! I believe the bottle was never opened. I have not removed the stopper. The bottom is molded - "Pat.No. 14357[6 or 8?]." The gold foil label with red background indicates the fluid content as 7 1/2 oz. The ivory-colored head stopper is hard plastic attached to a metal peg.
Size: 6 1/4" high x 3 1/4" (at shoulders) x 2" deep (at base).
Condition: MINT - doesn't get any better! Of note - the stopper on these bottles is very often found cracked and stained from fragrance -- this stopper is perfect! See additional photos.

DE RAYMOND, ART DECO PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1930s-1940s
This beautiful art deco perfume bottle was designed by Andre Jollivet for DeRaymond, a French company. This bottle was used for various DeRaymond fragrances. The bottle is empty. The hexagonal stopper and bottle are deeply molded with gilded accents. The bottom has multiple stampings -- molded in raised lettering "Made in France" and "A.Jollivet." It is also acid etched - "Made in France - A.Jollivet" with an etched squatty-shaped bottle in between the words "Made in France" and "A.Jollivet." The etching is difficult to see - it will take some good light and manipulation of the bottle. Displays beautifully. Heavy bottle -- weighs 1/2 pound.
Size: 4 3/4" high x 2 3/8" wide (corner-to-corner); 2 1/8" wide (flat sides).
Condition: Excellent. No chips or cracks on bottle or stopper; excellent gilding. The gilding on a panel with the inverted "V" appears to be worn on the outer edges of the "V" -- near the base of the bottle. It is not wear, since it is not in an area where the gilding would have been worn off by handling. It is a production flaw where the gilding was unevenly applied -- it is only on that one panel. CORNING & TAPPAN, LADY’S HIGH BUTTON SHOE, VINTAGE PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1880s
From Pauline's collection. This lady's high-button shoe perfume bottle was made by Corning & Tappan of New York. The label around the neck indicates that the bottle once contained Cologne. It would have been tied and sealed with a kid-covered cork. Partial original cork remains. The bottle is molded with scallops around the top and buttons down the side also edged with scallops. The scallop design continues across the toe of the shoe. In addition to the buttons, the center front of the shoe is molded with laces. A paper label on the front pictures the head of a beautiful young lady. Most of the label is intact, with the lady's head and face undamaged. Some of her shoulder is missing. This exact boot bottle appears in Jacquelyne Y. Jones-North's reference book, Commercial Perfume Bottles, page 18 (unnumbered), Picture 12. Amazing vintage bottle in excellent condition for its 120-plus years!
Size: 3 3/8" high x 2" long (length of the foot).
Condition: Excellent. The label is very good, with some loss to the paper. See additional photos.

VINTAGE, ELIZABETH ARDEN, ON DIT, PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1944
This interesting bottle was created in 1937 by Lucienne Coudert. However, it was not launched until after WWII, for Christmas 1944. The liquid in the bottle is not perfume and will be discarded before the bottle is shipped. The bottle and stopper, molded in clear and frosted glass, depict two women whispering secrets and gossip to one another. The fragrance is very appropriately named, "On Dit," (They Say). The motil of the gossiping ladies is molded the same on front and back of the bottle. There is an inner stopper, and the bottle design is completed with the curls of the women's hair forming the overcap. The gold foil hang-tag is printed with a black semi-open fan and the name of the fragrance, On Dit. Bottom of the bottle embossed, "Bottle Made in France." Please read the NOTE below regarding the contents of the bottle.
NOTE: The liquid in the bottle is NOT the original perfume. The bottle was filled with cologne before photographing it to enhance the design. The cologne has been removed and the bottle is now empty, making it safe for shipping.
Size: 3 3/4" high.

Parfums Lubin is one of the oldest perfume houses in the world. Pierre François Lubin founded the company in 1798, and its early history is linked to the high society of the Napoleonic era. His fragrances were worn by Joséphine and Pauline Bonaparte, and eventually, by all the crowned heads of Europe. They were first imported to America in 1830. This is a vintage (not quite 1798 vintage!) perfume bottle by Lubin for "Ocean Bleu" fragrance from 1925. The clear glass bottle has an embossed pattern of scrolls, or perhaps, waves, on the front and back. A blue and silver foil label is on the front of the flask-shape flacon. The small square base is embossed, "Lubin, Paris." Brass stopper. Interesting bottle from an ancient and historically interesting maker, Lubin.
Size: 2 1/2" high.
Condition: Bottle and stopper in excellent condition. See additional photos.

LUCIEN LELONG, ORGUEIL, METAL CLAD PERFUME BOTTLE, c.1946
This limited edition bottle was made by Lucien Lelong for "Orgueil." The bottle and stopper are completely covered in gold-colored metal! The bottle is empty. Number 244 is faintly etched and very faintly painted on the base of the stopper neck. The same number is on the INSIDE bottom of the bottle. The bottle opening is 3/4" wide, and the number can be seen by reflecting the inside of the bottle in sunlight or under good incandescent light. The large number is hand-written on paper which must have been glued to the glass before the metal was applied. There is also a round paper label on the bottom of the outside of the bottle: "PARFUMS LUCIEN LELONG, MADE IN FRANCE, NET. CONT. 4 FL. OZ., PARIS."
Size: 4 5/8" high x 2 3/4" wide, at widest point.
Condition: The bottle is in good condition -- minor, normal age scratches. The bottle rim has a very tiny nick and 2 tiny discolored areas. Stopper edge has nicks and dings. The underside of stopper has tiny flakes in the glass along the metal edge which were probably done in the manufacturing process when the metal was applied over the glass. The glass is completely level with the metal, so it would be difficult to chip the glass in that area. No chips to the stopper neck. NOTE: enlarged pictures are taken with a macro lens and greatly enhance any imperfections. See additional photos.
